Industrial Automation Tech Note 38
This document describes potential USB download problems that some customers have experienced with Graphite HMIs, and how to get around them.
Graphite® HMI / Graphite® Controllers
Problem Solved: Graphite USB Download Problems
We have had an increasing number of reports of problems with firmware upgrade failures on Graphite when using a USB link, with newer PCs and laptops. This exposed a weakness in the runtime to bootloader transition mechanism, which prematurely terminates the USB link, halting the firmware download mid-stream.
Crimson 3.1 includes an improved mechanism that avoids the USB link termination. Unfortunately, updating to the improved mechanism is subject to the current weakness.
Stop Factory Talk Services
The disabling of FactoryTalk services will allow the USB connection to function correctly. Stop the four services highlighted in Figure 1 to allow for proper USB functionality.
Other Programming Methods
The RS232 option is the most reliable option to upgrade the bootloader to the newer version that includes the improved mechanism. The new mechanism corrects the premature termination of the USB connection. Ensure that there is not a driver assigned to the RS232 Programming port of the unit, or clear the database via the System Menu. The part number for the RS232 programming cable is CBLPROG0.
Ethernet download will need to be enabled in the unit, this can be done via Crimson by clicking on the Download tab when Network is selected in the communications section, or via the System Menu.
Image File on the SD Card
The HMI can be updated via an image file placed on the SD card. In Crimson 3.1, click File – Save Image, name the file image.ci3, and then place the file on an SD card formatted FAT16. Insert the card in the HMI and then apply power to the HMI.
Failed USB Upgrade
In the event of a bootloader upgrade failure via USB, recover the unit by downloading a Crimson 3.0 file shortly after power is applied to the HMI.
