First, please reference the magnetic pickup manual. Each sensor has unique requirements for gear pitch and speed; and will be referenced throughout the troubleshooting process. This guide assumes that the device is properly configured to accept a magnetic pickup input.
Verify that the cable length between the sensor and meter is less than 10 feet in length.
Magnetic pickups generate a relatively small AC voltage, which will degrade over long distances of cable.
Is the less than 10 feet long?
Shorten the cable, or change sensor type.
Verify that the sensing gear is made of ferrous material.
As the name implies, a magnetic pickup uses a magnetic field to detect the gear's movement.
Replace the gear with one made of magnetic material, or replace the sensor with one that can detect non-ferrous materials.
Verify that the sensing gear has a propper pitch for the sensor.
The larger the gear pitch value, the smaller the gear teeth will be. The minimum gear pitch is the smallest size tooth that the sensor can detect.
Replace the gear with one that has the correct pitch, or replace the sensor with one that can sense the existing gear.
Verify the air-gap between the sensor and the gear.
All Red Lion magnetic pickups require a maximum of 0.05" air-gap.
*note that a standard credit card is 0.03" thick
Correct the air-gap.
Verify that the gear is moving at the correct speed.
Refer to the product manual, specifically the 1-Volt Threshold Speed column. The gear must be moving fast enough to generate a voltage high enough to register on the monitoring device. As the gear speed increases, the output voltage and frequency will also increase. Both the amplitude and frequency will need to be within the input specifications of the monitoring device.
Replace the gear, sensor, or monitoring device to achieve a working system.
Verify the output voltage and frequency.
Use an oscilloscope to verify the output voltage and frequency.
It sounds like a bad sensor.
It sounds like a bad meter.
