Abstract
This document describes how to configure PAXCDC50 communications with a Siemens S7-300 PLC using SIMATIC Manager.
Products
PAX Meters with PAXCDC50 option card installed.
Use Case: Configuring a PAXCDC50
This Technical Note is intended to be used along with the Red Lion Controls Product Bulletin PAXCDC2-D, which covers the operation of the PAXCDC50 – PROFIBUS DP Communications Option Card. Both the Product Bulletin and this Technical Note assume the reader has a basic understanding of the operation of the PAX meter as well as Profibus DP.
Installing the GSD File
Before you can begin commissioning the Profibus network the GSD file must first be installed. The GSD file can be installed from here. Once the zip file is downloaded, extract the files to a location on the PC, then open the HW Config in SIMATIC Manager and click Options - Install GSD file... highlighted in Figure 1.
Figure 1.
Click the Browse... button, browse to the GSD file that was downloaded, then click the OK button.
Select the GSD file in the Install GSD Files window and then click the Install button, highlighted in Figure 2.
Figure 2.
Click the Close button.
Now that the GSD file is installed, a PAX can be added to the PROFIBUS network. If the Catalog window is not already open, click View - Catalog to open it. Expand PROFIBUS DP - Additional Field Devices - Closed-loop controller, select the PAX Profibus DP item and drag it to the PROFIBUS network, as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3.
Select the PAX Meter that was added and right-click on it. Choose Object Properties. On the General tab, click the Profibus button, highlighted in Figure 4.
Figure 4.
Set the Address field to the address that was configured for the PAX using the rotary switches on the PAXCDC50 card. Figure 5 shows the address 100.
Figure 5.
Click OK.
Next, click on the Parameter Assignment tab. Expand the Hex parameter assignment folder and then click on User_Prm_Data (0 to 4). Configure the Value field to select which parameters will be available from the unit via PROFIBUS. This setting is explained in the PARAMETERIZATION section of the Red Lion Controls Product Bulletin PAXCDC2-D. The default is shown in Figure 6.
Figure 6.
Click OK.
With the PAX Meter still selected, refer back to the Catalog and expand the PAX Profibus DP device that was added previously. Select and drag the appropriate (Digital or Analog) model and drag it to the table at the bottom of the configuration window, which will highlight when you drag the item over it, see Figure 7 for the result of doing so.
Figure 7.
Double click the item in Slot 0 to open the Properties of the item. The window will show the starting address of the PAX data on the PROFIBUS network. This can be changed if required for the application, but the default was chosen by the system due to its availability, so it does not need to be changed.
Click OK.
The PAX data is now available for the PLC to use.
Figure 8.
Referring to tables 3 (shown in Figure 8) and 4 in the Red Lion Controls Product Bulletin PAXCDC2-D, the addresses to use can be determined with a simple equation, the required operands are:
Starting PLC I/Q (I = input to the PLC, Q = output from the PLC) address
Starting DATA BLOCK Byte of the data item to access (shown in the second column of the tables in the manual
Data Item Address = Starting address + Starting Data Block -1.
Example:
To access the Count A value of a PAXI, using the start address shown in Figure 7:
I256 + 9 -1 = I264
All of the PAX values are 32-bit, so the PLC should reference ID264.
